Life, be kind and let me run
Another race against the sun—

Run rash-hearted once again
Through the thunder and the rain—

To the beckoning rainbow’s end,
Where the trails of longing blend.

Life, be kind and let me pass!
See the shadows on the grass!

Life, release me for the sake
Of the promise that I make:

I will die three deaths for you—
One to render honest due,
One for pardon, one for rue.
