APA Referencing

Citing sources in APA format

Getting Started: What Does APA Require?

APA referencing is a way to acknowledge the ideas and information from other authors and sources that have contributed to your work.

When you use information from a source, such as articles, books, webpages, or class presentations, you must provide bibliographic information for that source on your references page and in the body of your assignment.

Each source in your references list must also be cited in the body of your paper using the author name and date of publication as a cross-reference. The author name as cited in the text and the list must match. Review this example.

♦ The narrative and parenthetical citations give the author(s) name and appear in the body of your paper immediately before or after the      information you have used from a source.
♦ The complete reference includes additional publication information about the source and is provided at the end of your paper in the references list.

It is important to take notes and keep track of where you get ideas and information for your papers. The first place to start is with the bibliographic information for your references page.

The information in this guide is based on the suggestions made in the 7th edition of the APA publication manual:

American Psychological Association. (2020). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.).                                                        https://doi.org/10.1037/0000165-000
