APA Formatting

How to format your assignment in APA style

Getting Started

APA stands for the American Psychological Association, and they publish a style guide that is updated regularly called the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.

The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) has chosen to follow APA guidelines for referencing and formatting because it is the style used by most nursing researchers. Many nursing journals use APA for publishing articles, so it is very important that those in the nursing profession know and understand the requirements.

What does APA require?

At UCQ, an APA-style paper may also be called a scholarly or academic paper. The requirements may differ from one professor to another, but you will be expected to include some or all of the elements displayed in the tabs on the left side of this screen. APA updated its guidelines with the publication of the 7th edition of its publication manual (October 2019). Ask your instructor which edition they want you to follow.

The most significant changes from the 6th edition to the 7th edition are student paper format, citations for three or more authors, the use of DOI numbers, and inclusion of guidelines for students. This LCGuide is being updated to provide guidelines from the 7th edition. Guides for the 6th edition are archived in the "Handouts" tab.
