Academic Integrity & Plagiarism

Use of Artificial Intelligence

Recent developments in artificial intelligence technologies have resulted in programs that can write research papers and other types of academic work. One example of this technology is ChatGPT.

This is definitely an interesting technological advancement that may have many useful applications.

However, having this technology write your assignments for you is NOT a useful application of artificial intelligence.

A paper written by artificial intelligence and submitted by you would be considered plagiarism.

While another person is not writing the assignment, it is not your own, original work.

This type of plagiarism is similar to ghost authorship. Therefore, it is also considered cheating and can have serious consequences because a student who has artificial intelligence write their paper is lying about the level of their academic ability and/or work.

According to UCQ, these consequences could include

  • Failing grade
  • Disciplinary probation
  • Suspension
  • Expulsion

Further information can be found in UCQ's statement of principles on academic integrity and dishonesty.

Guideline

Just like with ghost authorship, DO NOT DO IT!
