Encourage students to take necessary risks to break bad habits. The risks that they should be taking are writing more, questioning texts, and applying ideas from texts in different and novel situations.
Ask questions about choices made in the paper rather than make statements about what was done wrong in the paper. This respects students’ autonomy.
Focus on future improvement rather than error to empower your students.
