What is a Scholarly Source?

Scholarly sources come in different formats such as books, journal articles, and references resources. General characteristics of scholarly sources include

  • authors are experts or researchers
  • audience are researchers, experts and students
  • presents research, theories or research processes
  • opinion is supported by evidence
  • uses academic and technical language
  • includes citations and references
  • may include graphs, charts, tables or statistics
  • plain appearance, likely no photos
