Appraise the Literature

The quality and validity of the information sources need to be appraised. You need to be sure they provide valid information as the basis of your literature review.

You should consult your advisor and one of the research librarians for guidance when choosing a format or formats for your appraisal.


Common examples of appraisal tools used in nursing literature are

  • The McGill Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) and
  • The Johns Hopkins Research Evidence Appraisal Tool.
